Major Innovations

Five projects have reached the final round of the Truck Innovation Award 2027. They range from ultra-fast charging and hydrogen fuel cells to autonomous driving, digital driver coaching and hybrid powertrain technology.

The 2027 finalists are BYD Flash Charging and Blade Battery 2.0, cellcentric’s NextGen Fuel Cell System, the Level 4 autonomous driving programme from IVECO and PlusAI, Scania ProDriver, and ZF TraXon 2 Hybrid. Presented by the International Truck of the Year jury, the Truck Innovation Award recognises technologies and projects with the potential to improve efficiency, safety and sustainability in commercial road freight transport.

“This year’s candidates demonstrate just how many areas of road freight transport are currently developing at remarkable speed,” says Florian Engel, chairman of the International Truck of the Year jury. “Electrification remains a driving force, but innovation is also coming from hydrogen, automation and digital services.”

BYD Flash Charging and Blade Battery 2.0

BYD combines its second-generation Blade Battery with FLASH Charging technology, which in the specification for the Chinese market enables charging power of up to 1,500 kW through a single connector. Charging from 10 to 70 percent can take as little as five minutes, while 10 to 97 percent takes nine minutes. Even at -30 °C, BYD states a charging time of just 12 minutes from 20 to 97 percent. The Blade Battery 2.0 also offers a five percent increase in energy density. Battery-buffered charging stations are intended to reduce the impact of the high charging power on the electricity grid.

Cellcentric BZA375

cellcentric’s NextGen Fuel Cell System is designed for heavy-duty long-haul transport and uses a single-system architecture focused on efficiency, power density and simplified vehicle integration. Weighing less than 500 kg, the system delivers up to 375 kW of continuous net power. For a fully loaded 40-tonne truck, cellcentric is targeting hydrogen consumption of less than 6 kg per 100 km.

Compared with the previous-generation system, the company claims around 20 percent lower consumption, 40 percent higher power density and approximately 40 percent less waste heat under high-load conditions. Pre-series production in Esslingen has already begun, with series production ramp-up planned towards the end of the decade.

IVECO x PlusAI

IVECO and PlusAI have entered the competition with a programme aimed at the first deployment of Level 4 autonomous heavy-duty trucks in Southern Europe. Together with logistics company Sesé and the Government of Aragon, the partners are developing two IVECO S-Way trucks equipped with PlusAI’s SuperDrive virtual driver.

The multi-year trials are scheduled to begin in 2026, with a safety driver remaining on board throughout the testing phase. The vehicles are to operate on an approximately 300 km freight corridor between Madrid and Zaragoza, allowing autonomous driving technology to be tested in a real-world logistics environment.

Scania ProDriver

Scania ProDriver is a digital coaching service designed to improve the efficiency of vehicles already in operation by helping drivers further develop their driving style. Data from connected vehicles is converted into personalised feedback, learning content, practical challenges and gamification elements. Fleet managers can also track driver performance and potential fuel savings.

According to Scania, ProDriver is used by 120,000 drivers in 56 countries and can deliver fuel savings of up to five percent. In a real-world analysis involving 897 drivers, average fuel consumption fell by 3.1 percent.

ZF TraXon 2 Hybrid

With TraXon 2 Hybrid, ZF brings hybridisation into the transmission of heavy commercial vehicles, applying the company’s hybrid expertise to the specific requirements of the commercial vehicle sector. The system is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while giving manufacturers an additional option for markets and applications where the transition to full electrification is progressing at different speeds.

Innovation Beyond the Vehicle

The five candidates illustrate the broad scope of innovation currently taking place in road freight transport – from batteries, charging infrastructure and hydrogen powertrains to hybridisation, autonomous driving and digital driver services.

“The candidates address very different aspects of the same challenge,” says Engel. “The jury has to assess not only how advanced a technology is, but also whether it can make a tangible contribution to real-world transport operations.”

Night of the Stars

The winner of the Truck Innovation Award 2027 is due to be announced during the IAA Transportation in Hanover at the Night of the Stars gala on Monday, 14 September 2026.

“Innovation ultimately has to deliver practical value,” Engel concludes. “These five candidates demonstrate very different ways of improving efficiency, sustainability and productivity. Our task now is to decide which of them represents the most significant step forward.”
